AAA’s two-pronged Diamond rating system provides guidance in making hotel and restaurant selections:
  • First, properties that meet and uphold AAA’s rigorous evaluation criteria earn the AAA Approved designation, offering travelers quality assurance.

  • Next, AAA’s professional evaluators assign each Approved hotel and restaurant a rating of One to Five Diamonds, describing the level of complexity in service, décor, and amenities — from simple to luxurious.

To be considered for approval and rating by AAA, hotels and restaurants must first apply for an evaluation to determine if they meet requirements for comfort, cleanliness, and hospitality.

If the application is approved by AAA, one of AAA’s 65 full-time, highly trained, professional evaluators will visit the establishment for evaluation. All evaluations are unannounced to ensure that AAA’s professionals experience a hotel or restaurant just as a consumer would.

After a thorough inspection is conducted, an establishment that meets AAA’s requirements will become AAA Approved — indicating its proven ability to provide a quality experience for members. Additionally, approved hotels and restaurants also receive a AAA rating of One to Five Diamonds, describing the level of service complexity consumers can expect:

  • Every hotel or restaurant that achieves the AAA Approved designation offers an acceptable level of quality for members; AAA does not distinguish any degrees of quality.
  • AAA assigns each Approved hotel and restaurant a descriptive rating of One to Five Diamonds. The definitions vary for hotels and restaurants, ranging from basic to moderate to luxurious in terms of service, décor, and amenities.
